24th IMISCOE Annual Conference: United for Human Rights and Global Equity

6-9 July 2027, Brussels and online

Convergence of anti-gender and anti-immigration politics

Contemporary debates on migration are occurring in tandem and increasingly entangled with discourses of anti-gender backlash, set against the backdrop of social polarisation, broader democratic backsliding, resurgent authoritarianism, and a global erosion of human rights norms. Research on the co-option and instrumentalisation of gender equality to promote anti-immigrant rhetoric offers the conceptual lenses of femonationalism (Farris, 2017), homonationalism (Paur, 2022), and the racialisation of sexism (Scrinzi, 2023) to make sense of these processes. In line with the theme of the 2027 conference, this call seeks papers grappling with the complexities that emerge when projects, such as anti-immigrant rhetoric and gender backlash, converge.

We welcome contributions that address questions such as (but not limited to):

  1. Mechanisms through which anti-gender and anti-immigrant actors contribute to the hostile environment for migrants and threaten feminist politics, such as, for example, through co-option of gender equality rhetoric to justify exclusion, and far-right and ethnonationalist propagation of conspiracies on racial and gender threats.
  2. Scales and sites of collusion between different actors, from men’s rights activists to religious fundamentalists, ethnonationalist and authoritarian politicians, to create new conditions of exclusions and reversals of inclusions.
  3. Impacts of exclusionary rhetoric and practices drawing from anti gender politics on vulnerable migrant groups such as asylum seekers and queer migrants
  4. Instances of feminist, queer and migrant counter-mobilisation, practices of solidarity, coalition building and radical resistance against both anti-gender and anti-immigrant politics, including strategies for pushing back against backlash in policy, academia, and civil society.

We welcome papers that make theoretical or empirical contributions using feminist, critical, post-colonial, community-based, and/or indigenous approaches.

Applicants should submit a 250-word abstract, including a preliminary title and keywords, to Prof. Eleonore Kofman ([email protected]) and Dr. Aminath Nisha Zadhy-Cepoglu ([email protected]) no later than the 8th Oct 2026 (23:59 BST).
Please review the guidelines for writing the abstract at this link: 24th IMISCOE Annual Conference
Please also note your preference for an online or on-site panel. The accepted paper proposals will then be submitted as a panel to IMISCOE for additional review.
